23 Dec ALERT: Toy Gun Recalled due to Choking Hazard
According to Justice News Flash, a potentially dangerous toy gun was recalled last week. The toy in question is called the Action Team Toy Dart Gun Set. OKK Trading handles the distribution of the toy.
While no incidents were reported due to the dangerous idea of a toy gun, a possible choking threat for children was enough to order a product recall. Both the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the OKK Trading Company announced a voluntary recall. All consumers were advised to stop letting their children use the product immediately.
While the product is actually manufactured outside of the United States (by Kong Hoi Industrial of Hong Kong, China) the toy was a top seller among U.S. audiences. Unfortunately, the toy was deemed a dangerous object because if a child were to put the plastic darts in his mouth, there would be a significant chance of choking.
In the event that a child’s breathing is obstructed, she could suffer permanent brain damage or even death. While adults may be able to exercise good judgment in these matters, children cannot be expected to know any better. A product manufacturer has an obligation to create safe commercial products appropriate for the suggested age range. Otherwise, it becomes a case of product liability.
In the year 2007, there was one reported death of an 8-year-old boy in Port Arthur, Texas, that happened after the child chewed on the dart. According to the CPSC, about 22,000 of these dangerous $1 toys were being distributed at the time of the product recall.
