It is something that parents often fear. The possibility of a child getting into the medicine cabinet and being able to open medication packaging is a terrifying thought. The packaging of such products has improved dramatically over the years. Child resistant caps and tougher blister pack backing has improved safety. Trans World News is reporting that the Proctor and Gamble Company has just issued a voluntary product recall of Vicks DayQuil Cold & Flu 24 packs.
The reason for the Vicks DayQuil recall is the non child resistant backings on the blister packs in each box. In addition, adding to the danger and confusion, the outer packaging of the product states that the enclosed blister packs are child resistant. There is no problem with the medication itself and can be taken safely by most adults.
As explained in the press release by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the product contains acetaminophen in amounts unsafe for children. If a child were to swallow several pills, dire consequences could result including serious health issues and even death. This finding is especially concerning for consumers who have small children in the house, but even those who do not should consider whether or not children may visit the household and possibly come in contact with the product.
