According to About.com, E. Coli is a type of bacteria that lives in the digestive tract of animals and people and spreads through the feces of an infected animal or person being ingested by another animal or person. Different strains of E. coli can cause symptoms ranging from bloody diarrhea, cramping and nausea to severe anemia, kidney failure and consequently death. E. coli can find its way into our food if feces comes in contact with the food during processing. Cooking meat thoroughly can help prevent infection from E. coli tainted meat.
