26 Mar Nurse Spread Hepatitis: Indicted on Assault and Drug Charges
In a disturbing story out of El Paso, at least 15 military service members or their families were allegedly infected with hepatitis by an ex- William Beaumont Army Medical Center nurse who is suspected of having stolen their painkillers during surgery back in 2004.
While details of how exactly the blood-borne disease was transmitted and how the nurse and retired Army captain was able to obtain the drugs from the patients is unclear, the story highlights the need for hospitals and medical facilities to carefully screen and monitor their staff members and focus on quality of care.
