According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wireless vehicles may play a significant role in keeping the roads safe in the future. These vehicles would be equipped with devices that sense what the cars around them are doing and could, potentially, have a lot more information accessible to their systems that could help drivers stay safe. Some of what they could do could address many of the common causes of car crashes.

Knowing when Other Cars Are Braking

Of all the features that wireless vehicles—which the NHTSA calls connected vehicles—would have, the ability to stop crashes before they happen is likely the most significant. Using these systems, the vehicles could stop themselves to prevent many common types of crashes.

As just an example, if one of these vehicles were caught up in typically congested urban traffic, the safety feature that allows the car to sense other vehicles would be able to react to a potential rear-end collision before the driver themselves would likely be able to. If one car in a line of many needs to stop to avoid hitting an obstruction or anything else, the vehicles behind it would instantly be aware and apply brakes appropriate, without the owner having to intervene.

This could also help stop common accidents such as crashes at intersections, when backing out of driveways and other hazards. Because of this feature, the car would have, essentially, two safety systems. The seatbelt and airbags would protect the driver in a crash and the wireless system would prevent that crash from being as likely to happen.

Does it Work?

Testing on cars that drive themselves has already been done and has been very successful. The technology, for the most part, is already there and is by no means the stuff of science fiction. Wireless technology, of course, is everywhere, and that means that the basics for building these cars are already in place and ready to be implemented.

With these systems, drivers may be able to enjoy a safer, more enjoyable ride when they’re out on the road. Traffic crashes are among the leading causes of death, so using technology to prevent them simply makes good sense.
