The Dangers of Slip and Fall Injuries

The Dangers of Slip and Fall Injuries

Slip and fall injuries are likely more dangerous than you think. In fact, CDC figures reveal that more than 17,000 people lose their lives every year because of a slip and fall injury. These injuries are also associated with serious injuries, including broken bones, broken backs and, in the worst cases, even death.

You may have heard a term that's recently become very prevalent in the media, traumatic brain injuries (TBI). TBIs are most associated with veterans returning from the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they happen at home, too, and they happen quite a lot in conjunction with slip and fall injuries. In slip and fall injuries, TBIs are the actual causes of death of more than 40% of the falls that take the lives of the elderly.

As you can see, taking a spill in a restaurant, retail store or other commercial location is oftentimes a legitimate reason to sue. When the owners of such an establishment fail to properly safeguard their customers against harm, the consequences can be severe, even deadly.

When people do go ahead and file a lawsuit over a slip and fall injury, it's oftentimes because they've endured a great deal of suffering, financial hardship and, sometimes, because they've had their quality of life impacted in such a negative way that they've chosen to pursue legal action.

Filing a Lawsuit

A slip and fall attorney will generally be willing to meet with you for a free consultation. They use this time to get an idea of the circumstances of your claim. They may need to investigate it further, after the meeting, to determine whether they're the right attorney to represent you.

Retail owners and other commercial property owners are—or certainly should be, if they're not—insured for injuries to people on their premises that result from slips and falls. Plaintiffs in these lawsuits sometimes manage to net large settlements or jury awards over these injuries. These are not frivolous cases. When you look at how many people are seriously injured and die every year in these types of accidents, you can easily see how people end up needing to seek compensation, simply because they were seriously injured and they need the money to help pay for the recovery involved from an injury that they sustained due to no fault of their own. Talk to an attorney if you've had such an accident.
