01 May Nursing Home Abuse Signs
It can be very difficult for regular people to detect the signs of nursing home abuse. The reasons for this are very simple. Essentially, most of the people who are in nursing homes are already suffering from significant medical conditions. These medical conditions are often degenerative, making it difficult to tell if somebody's ill health is because of being abused or neglected or simply because of the condition that they're already suffering with. In addition to this, it's oftentimes difficult to tell whether the bruising and other injuries that come from abuse are actually from physical abuse or because of failing health. Here are some things to look for.
Illnesses
There will inevitably be some illnesses that people who are in close contact with a great many ill people suffer. For example, if a bad cold starts going around the nursing home, there will likely be quite a few of the residents who will end up suffering very severe symptoms from it, possibly severe enough that they require hospitalization. This should not happen all the time, however.
Infections that could result from poor hygiene, conditions that result from not receiving medication as directed by a physician and other common symptoms of neglect are all good causes to investigate the matter further. There have been nursing home residents who have perished from repeated infections that could have been prevented. Make certain that the nursing home where your loved one resides is adhering to good hygiene practices and administering all of their treatments properly.
Physical
The physical signs of abuse on elderly individuals can be very difficult to detect. If you have suspicions, however, the best thing you can do is to contact your physician and have them take a look at your loved one. Physicians, of course, will know what types of physical problems are likely the results of the resident's existing conditions and which ones have nothing to do with any of the conditions that they suffer with.
Nursing home abuse neglect cases can end up taking the life of a nursing home resident. Contact nursing home abuse attorneys if you want to discuss the matter further and if you want to determine whether or not your family could stand to benefit from filing a lawsuit to recover the damages caused by the abuse and neglect and to pay for the treatment that your loved one may require as a result of that abuse and neglect.
