16 Jun Helping an Attorney Help You: 3 Tips
A Dallas car wreck attorney will do their best to help you get compensated if you’ve been injured due to a negligent driver. You have to help them, however. There are three things you can do—or not do—to help them do their job and to help you get compensated for the Dallas car accident you were in.
1. Listen
Your attorney will give you a lot of advice. They will stress on hiring an attorney even when pleading guilty, because it is an important step for any criminal case. This advice is designed to make sure that, when you go to court, you have the best chance of winning your claim. Follow this advice to the letter. They will tell you who to talk to and who not to talk to and what to say in the cases that apply. Always take their advice on this and don’t be spontaneous.
2. Hang Up
If the insurance company, other driver or other driver’s attorney contacts you, just hang up. You can tell them to contact your attorney if you want to be more polite about it. Your attorney is your spokesperson and they’ll handle everything involving contact with the other party for you. Your insurance company may be looking for a way out of paying a claim, so be very sure you don’t talk to them without your attorney’s knowledge and consent.
3. Let the Attorney Negotiate
Sometimes, particularly if you’re suing a commercial company, you’ll be contacted with a settlement offer. If they throw a number out before you can hang up, call your attorney about it. The best thing to do, however, is just to hang up and not to listen to their offer. If they do this, they’re trying open a dialogue with you because they don’t want to deal with your legal counsel. Your attorney will make sure that they know how much it will take to settle the claim and the attorney will work with you to find an appropriate amount that’s in your interest, not the other party’s.
It’s best not to talk to others about the case until you go to court. Most of the time, the less you inform people about any legal action the better it is for you. Your attorney will generally advise that you keep your cards close to your chest and that you don’t let anyone who’s not involved know what’s going on. Saying “I can’t talk about it right now” is something most people will completely understand and respect.
