Dangerous and Recalled Drugs: The Facts

Defective products are manufactured every day that harm thousands and thousands of people each year. Often times some of these defective products are prescription drugs. Whether the drug has been recalled or not consumers who are harmed by dangerous drugs are still protected by the product liability laws of our nation. What Are The Dangerous And Recalled Drugs Out There?

Gardasil

HPV vaccine; the vaccine is being recommended for young girls to take in order to prevent certain types of HPV that cause cervical cancers. However, as of January 2010, 49 unexplained deaths followed Gardasil injections. Although the FDA has not recalled the vaccine, research whether or not it is right for your children before getting the vaccination.

Zocor

Cholesterol drug; side effects can include headaches, skin problems, coughs, depression and liver problems. An increased risk of muscle pains occurs when the largest dose of 80mg is taken.

Stalevo

Used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease; serious side effects that may develop over time are seizures and muscle pain. Possible increased risk of prostate cancer. Risks are still being reviewed, consult your doctor from qckinetix (Powell).

RotaTeq

Rotavirus vaccines; it has been reported that infants vaccinated with RotaTeq have suffered from twisting of the intestines.

Cardioverter defibrillators

All of the following implantable cardioverter defibrillators made by Boston Scientific have been recalled by the company:

• Cognis
• Confient
• Livian
• Prizm
• Renewal
• Teligen
• Vitality

Plavix

Heart medication used to prevent blood clots; taking Plavix with aspirin may cause dangerous bleeding and an increased risk of death, heart attack or stroke. If one metabolizes the drug poorly, effectiveness may decrease, consult a doctor.

Osteoporosis Drugs:

Fosamax

Esophageal cancer, a cancer that forms in the lining of the esophagus, has been a reported side effect.

Actonel, Boniva and Reclast

Like Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva and Reclast have been linked to Osteonecrosis of the jaw. Connections are still being reviewed by the FDA.

Zicam

Homeopathic cold treatment; many who have taken the product have reported anosmia, a condition that causes the loss of smell. The FDA has advised consumers to stop taking the following Zicam products; Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kid’s Size.

Invirase and Norvir

Antiviral medications used for HIV; use of the two drugs may cause abnormal heart activity. Consult your doctor with concerns.

Avandia

Helps control blood sugar level for people with type 2 diabetes; heart related risks have been associated with Avandia, in addition to stroke, liver toxicity, severe allergic reaction and severe hypoglycemia.

Ear Candles

Claim to cure sinus infections, the flu and even cancer; the 10-inch wax dipped cylinder cones are intended to be put into the ear to rid the body of impurities. There is no scientific proof of these ear candles alleviating any ailments. The FDA advises all consumers to stop the use of these products.

Tysabri

Used for patients with multiple sclerosis or Crohn’s disease; an increased risk of developing a rare brain infection, multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), occurs with each infusion of Tysabri taken. Call a doctor immediately if you are taking Tysabri and notice any changes in your health.

Meridia

Weight loss drug for obese people; the drug suppresses appetite by controlling the hypothalamus in the brain. The drug is especially dangerous for those with a history of cardiovascular disease as it increases the risk of c a heart attack or stroke.

Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplet, 100 Count Bottles

100 count bottles with a distinctive red EZ open cap were recalled due to musty, moldy odor associated with nausea and diarrhea, in November of 2009. Throw away all Tylenol Arthritis 100 count bottles and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare if you have a recalled bottle.

Depakote, Depacon and Depekene

Used for epilepsy, manic episodes of depression and for the prevention of migraines; there is an increased risk of birth defects due to the valporate sodium, active in all of these drugs. Birth defects associated with usage include cardiovascular malformation, craniofacial defects, nueral tube defects and defects to the brain and spinal cord.

Voltaren Gel

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve pain from osteoarthritis; a new side effect to the drug containing diclofenac sodium has been found, risk of liver damage. The liver damage usually occurs within the first month of use and has symptoms such as, nausea, fatigue, itching, stomach tenderness, flu-like symptoms necrosis, jaundice and hepatitis.

Pai You Guo

Dietary supplement for weight loss; the FDA has recalled this drug due to unknown safety and effectiveness. Two ingredients in Pai You Guo, sibutramine and phenolphthalein have been associated with increased blood pressure and cancer-causing agents. Stop taking this product and destroy it!

Vicks Sinex Nasal Spray

Vicks Sinex Vapospray 12-Hour Decongestant Ultra Fine Mist, 15 ml, lot number 9239028831 has been recalled due to contamination of bacteria B. If you have purchased the recalled product, check the lot number and dispose of it.

RockHard Weekend and Stiff Nights

Dietary supplements for erectile dysfunction; both of these products have been recalled due to an unapproved ingredient, sulfoaildenafil. The ingredient can interact with prescription drugs making these products dangerous.

Flomax

Alpha-blocker medication; research shows that men who take Flomax for an enlarged prostate are at an increased risk for surgical complications. People taking Flomax need to tell their doctor before undergoing surgeries, eye surgery in particular.

Propofol and Liposyn

Anesthetic agent and Intravenous nutritional product; both products have been recalled due to manufacturing errors and equipment failure.
