11 Dec Radioactive Water-An Overlooked Form of Poison
Once upon a time radioactive water, or radium water, was seen as cure-all tonic by the generation of the 1920s. Both doctors and patients consumed this radioactive water, through crocks lined with radioactive ore or premixed solutions.
However, as medical science progressed, we learned that consuming radioactive anything is a bad idea. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that radioactive contamination occurs when radioactive material is deposited on or inside of an object. Additionally, materials can be released into the environment and affect air, water, surface, soil, plants, animals, people or buildings. When a person becomes contaminated then he has been infected by contamination through one of these methods and now has radioactive materials on or inside the body.
Radioactive watercontamination specifically involves swallowing contaminated water like what happened in the camp lejeune water contamination lawsuit. Some contaminated water will be released through the body in a normal elimination process. However, radioactive water has also been known to stay inside the body and get deposited in different body organs.
The CDC states that the most common reasons for this type of widespread contamination is through:
· A nuclear power plant accident
· An atomic bomb explosion
· An accidental release from a device
· Nuclear weapons testing
· An intentional release of radioactive materials
Being poisoned by contaminated radioactive water sounds like a far-fetched scenario, doesn’t it? Perhaps one would only give serious thought to this if she lived close to a nuclear power plant. However, news stories of contaminated water are growing all over the state, the nation and all over the world. Locally, WFAA TV revealed “toxic test results in the well that provides drinking water for the small Parker County town of Hudson Oaks.” Aledo also received a notice of violation from state environmental officials because of two of its water wells that were found to be contaminated with radiation.
Think Quest provides a detailed discussion on the effects of radiation exposure on human health. Some notable observations included:
· A dose of just 25 rems causes some detectable changes in blood.
· Doses to near 100 rems usually have no immediate harmful effects.
· Doses above 100 rems can cause nausea, vomiting, headaches and loss of white blood cells.
· Doses of 300 rems or over can cause temporary hair loss, and damage to nerve cells.
· Half of all people exposed to 450 rems or more die.
· Doses of 800 rems or more are always fatal.
There is also reason to believe that even survivors of this radioactive water can still face a threat of various cancer diseases like leukemia lung cancer, thyroid cancer or breast cancer.
If you have been diagnosed with cancer or with other symptoms pointing to radioactive water contamination consult a doctor and an attorney.
