Non-Profit vs. For-Profit Nursing Homes: Is There a Difference?

Non-Profit vs. For-Profit Nursing Homes: Is There a Difference?

Selecting a nursing home for a loved one can be a difficult and emotional process. With more cases of nursing home abuse being exposed, everyone wants to find an environment where family members will be well cared for and rest easier by knowing their physical and emotional requirements are being met. For the most part, nursing homes are either maintained by for-profit and non-profit organizations. This often raises the question: which one can provide the best care for your loved ones?

According to an August report published in the online edition of the British Medical Journal, research spanning 82 individual studies on nursing home care revealed that non-profit organizations provide overall better care than for-profit businesses. Conducted from 1965 to 2003, the research observed facilities in both the United States and Canada. Of the 82 studies conducted, 40 showed that not-for-profit nursing homes were considerably better, while only three found that for-profit organizations provided better care. According to the studies, the remainders were divided on the issue. Interestingly, the research showed that non-profit nursing homes performed better in four key areas: lower occurrences of bed sores and ulcers, less usage of physical restraints, higher quality staffing and fewer violations or deficiencies cited by governing authorities.

While the findings of the research indicate that non-profit nursing homes are less likely to be in suspicion of nursing home neglect, there is no black and white distinction when it comes to the quality of a care facility. The most sensible approach to either variation involves doing your homework and evaluating different services. After making comparisons, you will have the information needed to find a nursing home that provides the best possible care for your loved one.
