In Fort Walton Beach, Florida, a motorist was left carless and homeless after a car accident. Eddie Campbell had been living in his Chevy S-10 for a while, citing expensive home prices as the cause of his homelessness. To Campbell, his blue Chevy truck was his home.

According to Florida Freedom Newspapers Campbell was hit in a car wreck by a Nissan Altima. Campbell was not at fault, as the other motorist ran a red light. The auto accident left both drivers stranded and one completely homeless. All that was left of his possessions after the tow were two space heaters, a hammer, one radio speaker, two small TVs and a pile of personal belongings from the truck.

This incident recalls a 2006 story in The New York Times detailing a situation which has since only grown more critical since the U.S.’s recession has hit full swing. The story quoted Kim Hopper of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, when she said “It’s most often the working poor who find themselves in this situation, teetering on the border between the possessed and the dispossessed.” Peter Van Giesen, a code enforcement officer for Lynnwood, Washington added that “most of these people were trying to find work.”

One can only imagine the emotional and financial turmoil a homeless person is going through.
