06 Oct Proper Pre-Natal Care Can Prevent Brain Injury
Having proper prenatal care is imperative for many reasons. Perhaps one of the most important ones is the prevention of brain injury to the unborn child. This type of injury can lead to the chronic condition called cerebral palsy. While some cases of cerebral palsy are the result of birth injury, a large number of cases occur due to conditions of the mother during pregnancy.
As most pregnant women could tell you, but probably do not want to think about, there are a myriad of things that can go wrong during pregnancy. Fortunately for the soon-to-be mother, it is her doctor’s responsibility to detect possible issues and correct them before they cause harm.
The risk of brain injury is one such concern as it can lead to a host of challenges including cerebral palsy. Among the problems that can lead to this type of brain injury are certain infections that the mother can develop, medical conditions of the mother such as high blood pressure, diabetes, placenta concerns, and erroneous dating of the pregnancy leading to premature births or babies born too far past their due date.
It is unfortunate, but oversights do take place and can have adverse costs.
