Cerebral Palsy from Birth Injury – Was It Preventable?

Cerebral Palsy is a condition caused by brain injury to the area of the brain responsible for motor control. This injury results in involuntary movements and a lack of muscle coordination and is a permanent condition. There are numerous issues that can be responsible for this type of brain injury and some are unavoidable. Sadly though, this condition is sometimes the result of a preventable birth injury. During the birth process there are several factors that can cause brain injury and result in cerebral palsy. Doctors are responsible for knowing the risk factors involved with a vaginal birth and the issues that signal the need for a Cesarean birth instead. When oxygen and blood to the infant are cut off during birth, brain injury can occur. The infant may be stuck in the birth canal for too long, the umbilical cord may become compressed, or the placenta may become prematurely detached. There is also the risk of brain injury due to the misuse of the vacuum or forceps during vaginal delivery. Of course, these are only some of the brain injuries that can cause cerebral palsy, but they are some of the preventable ones. Regrettably errors do occur, and injuries are often the consequence.
