Multiple explosions near downtown Dallas sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries and shut down local freeways and required a half-mile radius evacuation.

An acetylene tank is thought to have exploded. Acetylene is used for welding due to the high temperature of the flame – combustion of acetylene with oxygen produces a flame of over 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

The massive explosions and fire could be seen shooting into the air with billowing black smoke. The fire calmed shortly only to flare up again.

According to witnesses, pebble-sized ash was falling from the sky and debris can be seen more than 200 yards from the site of the blast.

Police and firefighters on the scene had trouble getting near the site of the explosions.

Nearby vehicles, grass and other materials caught fire, adding to the issue.
