09 Mar First Contestant With Disability in Miss USA Pageant
As women from throughout the United States compete in the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas this weekend, one participant in particular is sure to be an inspiration whether she wins or not. Affected with the neurological disorder cerebral palsy, 20-year-old Abbey Curran made a successful run for Miss Iowa and is ready to take on the rest of the contestants for the title of Miss USA.
Curran was quoted in a local news story as saying, “Cerebral palsy doesn’t have me, I have cerebral palsy, and so I’m not going to not compete for Miss USA just because it looks different.”
Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects muscle movement and body control. While there are a variety of causes, in some cases cerebral palsy is the result of a medical mistake at birth.
