Determining the proper child care facility for our children is difficult. Choosing a safe and ideal facility for special needs children is even harder. And even when we think we’ve found a trustworthy option, our assurance may be misguided. For example, the United Cerebal Palsy Dennis James Center in Cathedral City, Calif. was just shut down after the death of a 5-year-old girl prompted a state investigation.

Anyah Raven Glossinger, who suffered from autism, was participating in a hydrotherapy session while under the supervision of three of the center’s employees when she drowned. While negligence has not been determined to have played a part, a further investigation of the facility found numerous health and safety code violations, including lack of qualified staff members.

No investigations or settlements will bring young Anyah back, but we can all work to build awareness of the prevalence of neglect and abuse in day care and other child care facilities.
