09 Mar Baby Boys More Likely To Die Than Girls
Researchers from the University of Southern California reported Monday that baby boys are about 20 percent more likely to die by the age of one than baby girls. This is actually an improvement from previous decades, as similar data from 1970 noted that male infants were 30 percent more likely to die than their female counterparts.
Some of the reasons for the continuing gap include:
* Boys are 60 percent more likely to be born prematurely, and thus suffer conditions linked to pre-term birth
* Boys tend to have larger heads and body size, which puts them at greater risk for birth injury and mortality
