09 Mar Baby Bassinets by Simplicity Inc a Death Trap?
Baby Bassinet Deaths
Bassinets manufactured by a Pennsylvania company have resulted in two deaths by strangulation. The “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets, made by Simplicity Inc. of Reading, Pa pose a threat to the safety of any child who may be sleeping in them.
Apparently, they allow young children to slip through the product and strangle themselves, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The problem lies with Simplicity Inc.’s 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets, which contain metal bars that are spaced out farther than the government standards allow.
CPSC said that a 5-month old girl from Kansas became entrapped within the bars and strangled herself earlier this month. This comes almost a year after a 4 month old from Noel, Mo died the same horrible way.
Simplicity Inc. was purchased by SFCA Inc. in April, who has refused to cooperate with the government and recall the products. SFCA believes that they are not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity Inc.”
Last September, Simplicity recalled around 1 million cribs after reports of three deaths and seven incidents of entrapment were made public.
