19 Mar Sturdier Vehicles Hinder Rescue Efforts
The fatality rate of passengers and drivers involved in motor vehicle accidents is at an all-time low, partly because of reinforced steal beams, numerous airbags and other safety features in newer cars. That said, those same safety features often increase the time it takes for rescue workers to extricate injured people from mangled vehicles and thus delaying the administration of medical care and treatment for their injuries.
Hydraulic cutters are often worthless against reinforced alloys; pressurized gas canisters that cause airbags to inflate may explode if pierced by the cutters; and the battery cables found in hybrid vehicles carry the risk of serious shock to the rescuer. Additionally, newer tools that are developed to stand up to the newer car models carry a large price for city rescue departments, and with ever-evolving vehicle design, it is difficult to stay up-to-date.
