09 Mar Nursing Home To Pay $100,000 Fine for Patient’s Death
A California nursing home received its second state citation in two years following the death of a 94-year-old woman who wandered away from the nursing home last November.
The California Department of Public Health fined the Palomar Heights Care Center $100,000 in January for not providing adequate supervision.
A nurse also told police that Maria Cobian was checked and found sleeping 12 minutes after she was fatally struck by a car on a nearby street.
Palomar was cited in February 2006 after a 66-year-old man burned to death because he was left alone smoking a cigarette on a patio while connected to an oxygen machine.
The citation carries a $100,000 fine, according to public health department.
Nursing home abuse happens far too often and as seen in this case, is often covered up by nursing home staff writing false records of patient checks and care reports.
