Working While Receiving Social Security Benefits
Important Things If You Work and Receive Social Security Benefits
Report any new job, even self employment, to the Social Security Administration, regardless of the amount of your earnings.
If you're still claiming disability, you can enter a trial work period, and can continue receiving benefits for up to nine months.
Report any extra work expenses that are a result of the disability. For instance: specialized equipment, wheelchairs and some prescription drugs.
The Social Security Ticket To Work Program
Under the Ticket to Work Program, Social Security may send you a Ticket that you can use to help you go to work or earn more money. You may take the Ticket to your state vocational rehabilitation agency or to an Employment Network of your choice. Employment Networks are private organizations that have agreed to work with Social Security to provide employment services to beneficiaries with disabilities. Your participation in the Ticket Program is voluntary and the services are provided at no cost to you.
Returning To Work With A Disability
After you start receiving disability benefits, you may want to try working again. There are special rules called “work incentives” that can help you keep your cash benefits and Medicare while you test your ability to work.
