ataxic cerebral palsy

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy affects 5-10% of children with cerebral palsy. Ataxic cerebral palsy is characterized by poor, low, or hypotonic muscle tone. Since ataxic cerebral palsy is distinguished by low muscle tone, poor muscular coordination results, causing the limbs to look loose and floppy.

In a child with ataxic cerebral palsy, damage to the spinal cord and cerebellum causes problems with a child's ability to balance resulting in unsteady movements. Children and individuals with ataxic cerebral palsy tend to walk with a wide based gait, their feet placed far part and shuffling.

Uncontrollable fine motor skills become very noticeable when a child with cerebral ataxic palsy reaches for an object, turns a page in a book, writes a sentence, or tries to use scissors. Known as intention tremor, trembling and shaking occurs as the child moves closer and closer to the object. Depth perception is often implicated in cerebral ataxic palsy, causing additional difficulties in fine and gross movement control.

If you believe or want to find out if your child's ataxia and cerebral palsy could have been prevented or was a result of medical malpractice, negligence, misdiagnosis, or not diagnosed at all, contact our birth injury attorneys.

When doctors, nurses, staff, and medical facilities fall below the minimum standard of skill and care to which their profession demands, medical malpractice and negligence is an unfortunate but likely result. At the Rasansky Law Firm, we question why these healthcare professionals failed to do everything possible to prevent your child's injuries. We regularly consult with Board Certified Obstetrician Gynecologists, Maternal Fetal Specialists, Neonatologists, and Pediatric Neurologists to determine whether your child's injuries should have been prevented.
